Takase River

This canal, excavated in the early Edo period by the wealthy merchants Kakukura Ryōi and Sōan, was created for the purpose of transporting goods between the center of Kyoto and Fushimi, drawing water from the Kamo River. During the late Edo period, historical figures such as Sakamoto Ryōma and Kido Takayoshi were active along this river. The area north of Shijō-dōri is rich with historical sites from that era.
