A Visit to Kyoto’s Kiyomizu-yaki Pottery Festival

This autumn, we visited the Kiyomizu-yaki Pottery Festival, a popular event celebrating Kyoto’s rich ceramic traditions.
We took a special bus from Kyoto Station to the venue, which cost ¥260 one way during the festival.

The festival takes place throughout the Kiyomizu-yaki pottery district in Yamashina, Kyoto. First held in 1975, it has become a beloved event where visitors can discover works by Kyoto-yaki and Kiyomizu-yaki potters and ceramic artists.
In 2026, the festival celebrated its 50th edition and began a new chapter under the name KYOPO — Kyoto Pottery Expo.

Discovering the Beauty of Tea Utensils
Among the many pieces on display, we found not only pottery for everyday use but also a wonderful selection of utensils used in the Japanese tea ceremony.
There were tea bowls combining techniques from Shigaraki ware and Shino ware, as well as hand-shaped bowls with unique textures and character. We also came across Kiyomizu-yaki tea utensils, including water containers, lid rests, and incense containers, decorated with vibrant colors and intricate designs.
Each piece reflected the individuality of its maker and the beauty of traditional craftsmanship.

The rich colors and textures, shaped by the iron in the clay and the heat of the kiln, are part of what makes each piece so special.

Tea Bowls and the Art of Japanese Tea
One of the pleasures of the Japanese tea ceremony is discovering the tea bowl chosen for you.
Taking a moment to appreciate its shape, colors, and texture is part of the experience. Each encounter reflects the spirit of ichigo ichie — the idea of treasuring every meeting as a once-in-a-lifetime moment.
The host’s choice of tea bowl is also an expression of hospitality, thoughtfully selected to make each gathering special.
When life gets busy and you need a moment to slow down, why not discover the world of Japanese tea?
A bowl of matcha offers an opportunity to pause, appreciate the beauty of everyday life, and find a moment of calm.
