Irises at Heian Jingu Shrine

We had some rain yesterday in Kyoto. It was long after the fine days of intense heat, and the rain felt somewhat soothing.

So, I took a walk to Heian Jingu Shrine (平安神宮), and fortunately, the shrine was open to public with free admission yesterday!

The Heian Jingu shrine was founded in 1895, in order to celebrate Heian Sento (平安遷都, the transfer of the capital to Kyoto in the Heian era). Its famous shrine building was modeled after the design of Cyodoin (朝堂院) of the ancient Heian dynasty, in the five-eighth scale. Its gigantic scarlet Torii (鳥居) gate is also very popular.

In this season, pretty iris flowers are blooming in the pond of west garden of the shrine. Deep purple and lavender colored irises standing in the gentle rain were so beautiful and elegant.

Viewing flowers in such a scenic, historical and religious site is truly a privilege of traveling in kyoto. Please come to Kyoto and enjoy watching beautiful flowers.
