About the play: “Funabenkei” (Benkei in a boat)

The Noh play “Funabenkei” is a popular work based on the Japanese classical literature “Gikeiki” (Chronicle of Yoshitsune). It is a dramatic and powerful Noh play that depicts the bond between Minamoto no Yoshitsune and his loyal retainer, Musashibo Benkei, and their battle with the vengeful spirits of the Taira clan.
The story begins with Minamoto no Yoshitsune, who has been driven out of the capital, fleeing to the western part of the country.
The first half depicts the sorrowful farewell scene in which Shizuka Gozen, sad to say goodbye to Yoshitsune, performs a dance and is returned to Kyoto.
In the second half, as Yoshitsune and his party set sail, they are caught in a storm and the ghost of the slain Taira no Tomomori appears and attacks them, but the vengeful spirit is calmed by Benkei’s sutra chanting, and the ship sets sail again.

A popular play that combines emotion and power.
